FYI. To be technical, Windows 8 introduces SMB V3, improving security features among other things. http://www.windowsecurity.com/...SMB-Connections.html Although supposedly backwards compatible with SMB V1 & V2 found on most current MFPs, the transition is not quite as seamless as Microsoft hoped for. SMB V3 will likely require firmware updates from all of the copier manufacturers to be compatible. I have no idea on the Universal Print drivers until you try them. It is only a short time frame

Windows 8 uses SMB version 3, most devices are built on SMB version 1 and 2. Version 3 is supposed to be backwards compatible, however most devices running versions 1 and 2 don't have that functionality enabled, or do not understand the newer protocol entirely. Many copier vendors do not have a solution for this yet. Both Ricoh and Toshiba are not scheduled for a solution until Jan 2013. Ricoh Problem Bulletin #TS121417 dated Oct 2012 confirms the same. Unless HP has made series improvements to their Edgline series they are no threat to a decent MFD. I was at one of the ON Demand shows a few years back and looked at the output from their Edgeline series and was totally unimpressed. The other issue that "Printer Companies" have not figured out when it comes to MFDs is the Accessories. They put flimsy CRAP accessories on their "MFD" (I use the term generously) and expect them to last for a 3-5 year lease term. And they don't care if they don't

I spoke to an old friend who's been a dealer rep for decades, literaly, who is with Sharp (one of five nationwide). He indicated that dealers are still signing up and that fellow Sharp employees want Kyocera-Mita to buy up the division. I feel that like what the US Government did for the US Auto industry, Japan will do for their panel industry. Japan cannot lose to Korea in the panel field like it has in the automobile field. Their dealer program has got to be the best in the industry now I constantly hear that dealers carrying their line are leading with KM devices. I wonder if that has to do with the legacy Ricoh guys who took over that division?
