This Week in the Copier Industry Ten Years Ago

Third  Week of July 2012

sponsored by

I picked up a recent thread on Linked from a person who is on our industry, but more on the out-side looking in.  One of the comments was from a person that is still in our industry and it seems that person has given up on print and our industry.

I was surprised to read this and am sorry that this person does not see the old opportunities available.  That person is right and those opportunities for print (copiers, MFPs) are fading into the past.  However I'm a believer that our industry is half full and the opportunities for dealers are endless with the current stack of technologies available to copier dealers.

Copiers aka MFPs are still a big part of my business, however I've leaned to adapt yet again to change with the times.

Enjoy These Awesome Copier Threads from Ten Years Ago This Week!

Can the new MP 2852 (& 2352,3352) Print from a Macbook without Postscript?

·
I think had read some where here that the new series will now print from a Mac without the Postscript requirement. Could anyone confirm this? And does anyone have the set-up instructions for network printing? An existing customer now wants to use his Mac laptop also to receive scans and I don't know to set that up either, argh. Thanks in advance for any help!

Macs can print without PS for some time now. Scanning will work but is limited to email on version 10.7 I think. That is a limitation of Mac not Ricoh.

·
Macs have been able to print without PostScript since at least 2001, CUPS has full PCL support for example. The limitation is the "afterthought" print drivers the MFP industry provides for Macs. Usually something cobbled together and years behind in version support. Admittedly, Macs are only 10-12% of the market, but they are a strong majority of sales over $1k. MFP makers are really missing out, it's typically decision makers they are slighting with feeble support. Printer makers have it

Re: So it happended again!

Wholly Geez! What is the point with this? Sales is losing one entire week of selling. We need to have the equipment installed by month end to account for sales in a given month. Then they require 60 cold calls? What the heck? It is not quantity but quality of the calls which will lead to appointments, etc. What is management trying to drive?

Re: So it happended again!

What is management trying to drive? You ask. Whatever they can get away with - obviously they haven't considered, nor care little for the ramifications of their short notification. Your selling month as well as theirs, will simply be shorter and your sales cycles are disrupted once more. Perhaps there are bonus' at stake that owners can minimize?

RBS, pre Lanier was a pretty decent competitor. Once under the control of Lanier, who was a price 1st company, then the corp. image changed to try to buy every deal. PLus they then started to attack the Ricoh dealer network any way they could, even just taking away the service revenue

Re: My latest issue with my job....

Maybe I should move to Oxnard! I emailed the owner that I need to speak with him. I do not want to speak with my sales manager or GM. If I can get the one on one I may get what I want, and if I don't get the one on one at least I tried. I'm really tired of losing stuff on my comp plan, a few months ago it was the dental plan, about a year before that they stated that they had been paying me to much (salary) for almost two years and backed me down $600 per month and now I lose the 1% MA revenue

OG that is some great info. You hit the nail on the head on how leasing companies take advantage of the end users in many ways. I know how to get around some of these but not sure how you convince a customer to spend more when many of these can be handled easily and a smart rep will know how to get around this....and many customers that have been dealing with copier companies know the tricks of the trade and not fall into those traps.

had all day on the 23rd to make our 60 cold calls and then make additional closing calls. I figured with the holiday of the 4th and then closing the month early, we lost 10% of our selling days, to boot I took some vaca days. Just another straw on the camels back right? Maybe if I stay there long enough we'll be closing the month on the 1st!!
